Abnormal vaginal discharge? How to judge it from the "color" and "texture"?

As a child, you were constantly bombarded with advertisements claiming "abnormal or increased vaginal discharge." Now that you're an adult, have you also been troubled by "abnormal or increased vaginal discharge"?

We know that vaginal discharge is a secretion from a woman's vagina, and most of the time, what we see is normal, physiological discharge. However, sometimes abnormalities can occur, so let's talk about the issue of "color." In fact, vaginal discharge comes in many colors, and through these colors, we can make a preliminary judgment to see if we have a gynecological disease.

1. Normal state

Normal vaginal discharge in women should be clean in color, have no foul odor, and cause no itching. This is normal and there is no need to worry. Normal vaginal discharge is a mixture of three substances: secretions from the cervical canal and endometrial glands, and exudate from the vaginal mucosa. Its formation is related to estrogen and varies in quality and quantity throughout the menstrual cycle. Normal vaginal discharge keeps the vagina in a relatively moist state, ensuring that the vaginal walls are not damaged during sexual intercourse.

2. Yellowish- green purulent discharge with a foul odor.

If wiping this yellowish-green substance produces foam, it indicates that it is purulent. This is mostly caused by trichomoniasis , and patients with chronic cervicitis may also secrete this substance from their vagina.

3. Yellow, thin, watery, sticky, and has a foul odor.

This type of discharge could indicate cervicitis , or in more serious cases, cervical cancer . In such cases, it's necessary to have a vaginal discharge test and a cervical biopsy at the hospital. These tests are more accurate and facilitate targeted treatment for the specific disease.

4. Grayish-white, thin paste with a foul odor.

Grayish-white vaginal discharge is usually caused by bacterial vaginosis , indicating a bacterial infection. If it's only occasional, it may heal on its own thanks to the vagina's natural cleaning mechanisms. However, if it occurs frequently, it's advisable to consult a doctor for proper treatment. Also, avoid self-medicating, as this could lead to incorrect diagnosis and worsen the condition.

Women should understand what different colors of vaginal discharge represent, and it's hoped that every woman will pay close attention to the color of her vaginal discharge. If any abnormalities are found, seek immediate and targeted treatment. Don't delay seeing a doctor because you're embarrassed to talk about it. Some gynecological diseases are easier to treat in their early stages; if treatment is delayed, they become much more difficult to manage.
