Uterine hypoplasia, also known as infantile uterus, does this mean she has no chance of becoming a mother? Experts say not necessarily; women with infantile uterus can conceive successfully with treatment.

Is years of infertility caused by an immature uterus?

In May of this year, Ms. Wang underwent a thorough examination at the hospital and was diagnosed with an infantile uterus. During treatment, the doctor first administered artificial menstrual cycle therapy to promote uterine development, followed by a three-stage treatment using estrogen, progesterone, and traditional Chinese medicine. Knowing that although her situation was not optimistic, she still had a chance to conceive, Ms. Wang immediately felt relieved.

During her subsequent treatment, she remained relaxed and focused, accepting the treatment and taking her traditional Chinese medicine as prescribed. Four months later, she unexpectedly became pregnant. Zhai Shuyi, Deputy Chief Physician of the Gynecology Department at Panyu Maria Hospital, stated that Ms. Wang's successful pregnancy was largely due to her mental state. With proper treatment, the chances of pregnancy are even greater; therefore, an infantile uterus does not necessarily mean infertility.

Early treatment is necessary if an infantile uterus is detected.

Delayed menstruation accompanied by scanty menstruation, dysmenorrhea, or even irregular menstruation is often an important manifestation of uterine hypoplasia. Uterine hypoplasia is mainly caused by endocrine dysfunction, especially insufficient secretion of estrogen and progesterone due to ovarian dysfunction. The size of the uterus can usually provide a general indication of whether the endocrine system is functioning normally. Zhai Shuyi reminds everyone that women with a significantly infantile uterus do indeed have difficulty conceiving, and those who discover an infantile uterus after puberty should seek medical attention promptly.

After a comprehensive examination including electrochemiluminescence immunoassay for pituitary stimulation, vaginal ultrasound, and chromosome analysis to confirm the diagnosis, artificial cycles are often used clinically to regulate endocrine function, causing the uterus to enlarge and facilitating natural conception. If conception does not occur after artificial ovulation stimulation, laparoscopic treatment and endocrine medication may be considered to restore regular menstruation. "We have treated many such cases clinically, and some patients have successfully conceived and given birth after appropriate treatment."

Experts remind

Mental stress can indeed affect conception.

Women trying to conceive must relax and release stress. Zhai Shuyi stated that psychological factors are a significant cause of infertility. These factors can affect the hypothalamus through the nervous system, leading to dysfunction of the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis, affecting sex hormone secretion, causing anovulation and amenorrhea, and can also cause spasmodic contractions of the uterus and fallopian tubes, abnormal cervical secretions, and hindering sperm from entering the uterine cavity, thus affecting conception.
