Three things you should never say to your mother-in-law or daughter-in-law

1. "Mom, you don't understand..."

This is a phrase that young wives often say when handling housework or taking care of children. You might not think much of it, but these words are what hurt the elderly the most. While she may genuinely not understand, that doesn't mean she lacks ability or knowledge, and it certainly shouldn't infringe upon her right to have her own son and grandchildren.

Your statement, "You don't understand," completely excluded her from the whole situation. From her perspective, you were clearly telling her, "If you don't know anything, don't get involved." To improve this relationship, I suggest changing your statement to, "Mom, please tell me..."

2. "My baby..."

Many mothers who love their children often unconsciously talk about "my baby" in front of their mothers-in-law. However, if the mother-in-law hears this, it may cause a conflict between them. The mother-in-law might think to herself, "What do you mean 'my son'? The baby is my Li family's eldest grandson..."

Therefore, while there's nothing inherently wrong with using terms of address that convey a strong sense of belonging, it can make the mother-in-law feel threatened. To avoid this kind of conflict, we suggest changing the terms to "your grandson (your granddaughter)..."

3. "Your mother..."

For most daughters-in-law, it's almost impossible to treat their mother-in-law like their own mother. For example, after making a mistake, the mother-in-law will never say to you, "What a silly child," like a real mother would. Therefore, many daughters-in-law often use phrases like "your mother is like this" when chatting with their husbands.

Your mother-in-law will definitely feel uncomfortable if you address her like that. Therefore, as a daughter-in-law, it's best to call her "Mom" more often, both in public and in private, to improve your relationship with your mother-in-law.
