Should I rest during my period?

Menstruation requires rest, as it is also known as "period," meaning a "special holiday." If you engage in strenuous exercise during your period, the uterine lining can flow backward into the pelvic cavity, causing infertility due to endometriosis, chocolate cysts, and even many other unusual conditions.

I've seen a case where a woman experienced monthly rectal bleeding, initially suspected to be rectal cancer, but it was later discovered to be endometriosis. Due to the severity of the bleeding each time, surgical removal was the only option. Others experience heavy hematuria during menstruation, accompanied by severe abdominal pain, ultimately requiring the removal of the ovary that initiates menstruation to cure the condition. The reason these areas, unrelated to the uterus, bleed regularly like menstruation is because endometrial tissue has implanted there—potentially in the rectum, bladder, or even the lungs and nasal cavity. Nosebleeds during menstruation have long been documented in Traditional Chinese Medicine as "retrograde menstruation." Current research suggests that the migration of endometrial tissue is related to strenuous activity during menstruation. Therefore, flight attendants and athletes, especially gymnasts and divers, have a higher incidence of this condition, directly related to their strenuous exercise and changes in posture during menstruation.

During menstruation, the uterine lining sheds. Because the fallopian tubes and abdominal cavity are connected, menstrual blood can flow back through the fallopian tubes into the abdominal cavity, causing the uterine lining to spread within the abdominal cavity. If it implants on the ovary, it cannot be expelled with each menstrual bleeding and gradually forms a cyst. Once this cyst ruptures, the old, accumulated blood is the color of chocolate, hence the name "chocolate cyst." The presence of the cyst affects the release of eggs, which is why these patients are prone to infertility.

Clinically, 70%-90% of women experience retrograde menstruation, but only 10%-15% suffer from endometriosis. This is because the latter is also related to other factors such as genetics and immunity. However, changes in body position and strenuous exercise are triggers for this disease, so it is still recommended to rest during menstruation and at least avoid excessive exercise.

How do you know if you have endometriosis? The most typical symptom is dysmenorrhea, specifically secondary dysmenorrhea, which is dysmenorrhea that suddenly appears and becomes increasingly severe. In this case, it is necessary to go to the hospital for examination. It can be controlled through surgery or medication, at least giving women who have not yet conceived the opportunity to have children.
