During sexual arousal, the vagina undergoes three distinctive changes: lubrication, dilation at the base, and color change. Vaginal lubrication is the primary manifestation of female sexual response; sufficient sexual stimulation lasting only 10-30 seconds is sufficient to induce this phenomenon. Vaginal lubrication is a preparation for intercourse, but for women, it is not the only preparation, as psychological and physiological preparation are equally important for sexual intercourse.
During the plateau phase, the heart rate increases from the normal 60-80 beats/min to 100-160 beats/min. Blood pressure also increases significantly. Changes in respiratory rate lag behind changes in heart rate. Breathing becomes deeper and faster during the plateau phase.
First, there is a brief pause, and the stimulation of the clitoris brings the tension to its peak, which then spreads to the vagina and pelvis. The intensity of this stage varies greatly, and sometimes there are sensations of "dropping," "opening," or fluid release (some women describe it as mild labor pains). Immediately afterwards, a hot sensation spreads from the pelvis to the whole body, and finally ends with the characteristic pelvic tremor and contraction.
